dump/restore history?

I'm writing up a simple document on using 4.3BSD dump and restore for
our operators, and I'd like to give them some history about the
programs.  I think it would be really interesting for them to see, in
a simple way, how it has evolved from its conception.

Anyone willing to contribute?
