Threads? in UNIX?

G.Michael Vose, in an article "Threading the OS/2 Needle," in
"Computer Language," July, 1988, p.34, writes:
"... Threads used as the underlying concept for multitasking are
beginning to have a major impact on operating system design. Not only
are they the basis for OS/2, but the rewrite of UNIX currently underway
as a joint Sun/AT&T project also incorporates the use of threads to
make that version of UNIX more competitive with OS/2. ... "
Can anyone confirm or expand?
