3B2/600 SCSI tape boot procedure

The manuals for the 600 say it can't be done, even if it is done on
the release tape... Hmm.
After taking a very close look at the procedure, I think they are
using a very special boot program that places a special (very!) root
filesystem in memory, then boots unix. The device entry for the root
filesystem is /dev/icd0. My guess is that this is in core.
Real slick... but I need to make a similar tape to install UNIX (we
have a large installed base here, and being that we're AT&T, we have
the licensing problems normally associated with distribution taken
care of...)
What's the format of this tape??? Does anyone out there know who designed
it? Wrote it? Anything at all???
For that matter, does anyone know a C. J. Rhea??? (a name, foolishly
left in the installation script...)
Any help or pointers will be *MUCH* appreciated, as I haven't the
foggiest idea where to start looking!
