When I tried the following:
1) set "stty erase ^X"
2) echo hi > a^Hqw
3) set "stty erase ^H"
4) rm -i *
"rm" doesn't complain. System is ULTRIX 1.2. rm is /bin/rm
(std. rm). When doing a "ls" I get the file showing as "a?qw".
