Maybe what you heard was something about MINIX that got twisted around.
MINIX is a UNIX clone for PC class machines, written by a college instructor
for operating system classes after AT&T mandated that UNIX source could not
be used for education purposes. MINIX was designed to run on PC's with only
floppy disks, and runs with the root file system in a 256K RAM disk.
