Exabyte tape drives with BSD ?

Is there anyone out there using Exabyte tape drives
(8mm video cassette) with BSD?  The local distributor
only knows of other sites using VMS.

We've been trying them on a microvax-II, with very
non-predictable results.  Sometimes it works fine,
but mostly we get read errors, write errors, lots-
of-other errors, and usually the drive and the
process hang and require powering down the drive
and the cpu to fix it up again.

If you have any useful information, could you mail it
