Weird problem with vi... "Not that many lines in buffer"

Another thing you could do is 1) in your EXINIT var set nomodeline (I'm
not sure of the syntax for the variable) or 2) in $HOME/.exrc have the line:
se nomodeline
As someone else pointed out, the .exrc file gets loaded before your file,
so the option gets turned off. (Now if you REALLY want it, go back to
what Warren said above...)
This should do it also.
