BSD 4.3 and sockets

I'm looking for a way to set asynch i/o (and subsequently a signal
vector) on a socket fd. Using fcntl to set non-blocking and setting the
signal vector doesn't work. Is there any way besides polling the socket
every twice in a while to find out if another socket is attempting
communication?
Thanks for any help or references, I just can't* get this to work.
