I asked about booting up under a new kernel saying:

Thanks to johna at grumpy.ima.isc.com, hue at netcom, and jhood at biar.uu.net,
each of whom correctly advised me that I needed to make sure the file
I was booting from was named /unix. I changed the name to /unix from
/unix.JMhfc ( "kernel with Jim Murray's asy driver with hardware flow
control enabled" ) and everything seems to work fine.
