kill -HUP or -TERM will make vi preserve the buffer.
>From inside vi the `:pre' command will.
When the system has crashed and is rebooted, /usr/lib/ex*preserve is
run from /etc/rc to save ex/vi temporaries in /tmp, after which /tmp
normally is cleared.
