recommendations for UN*X to run on a 286 / 386 box

We are looking into porting one of the applications we write here at
Lakart to a low end UN*X machine, something like a desktop 286 / 386
machine. I know that SCO Xenix is one possibility, but rather than
dive in the deep end and go straight for that, I'd like to try to find
out what other ports exist, what the licensing fees are, etc. etc. etc.
Cost per delivered system is going to be important, since we will be
shipping a fair number of systems (i.e. 10 to 20 per month), but we
also want something with good networking capabilities (this is
absolutely essential), plus good compilers, etc.
To put it in a sentence, where do we go to get the most bang for our buck?
Please E-mail, or if you feel you must follow up, I've directed followups
to comp.unix.questions.
Thanks in advance,
