Removing garbage files

Here is one that has got me beat, frustrated and down right angry. I
have some files in a directory that I can't remove. When I "ls" the
directory the output puts my terminal into graphics mode. There are
several of these culprits and in each one you can see a letter or two in
the file name. When I do "rm -i *k*" I get told "%%%%%k#@!0=-+ not
found".
I even got desperate and did "rm -r" on the directory, but it wouldn't
remove it because it wasn't empty...because it couldn't find some of the
files to remove, etc etc. I feel like editing the directory file and
changing the names of these files from control characters to ascii so I
can remove them, but you can't edit a directory file (please correct me
if I'm wrong on this).
For those of you who feel up to tackling this one, I can included the
output of two "ls" runs. The first uses the "-b" flag to print
non-graphic characters in octal. The second used the "-q" flag for
question mark substitution.
-b output:

I am running SCO XENIX V/386 2.3.2 on a 386/33Mz system. To the one who
scores on this I will be forever indebted. Reformatting the disk does
seem a little drastic.
