Determining ARCH and OS

Are there any widely used method of labelling hardware architectures and operating
system revisions?  For example, the "amd" package uses "sun4" for any sparc-based
system and "sos4" for SunOS 4.x revisions.  "tcsh" also has some architecture labels.

Who's got a reasonable but thorough set?  (Of course, if we all go POSIX maybe this
won't be necessary in a few years, but ...  While that's not yet the case, we still
have to put up with hell to make things portable but idiot proof for the site programmers who get the chore of bringing up software.)
