TCP/ip questions reguarding accept()

I have program that is a multi-user game(lpmud) and accept() hangs the
program after the first socket is accepted and it tries to get another
and there isn't one there.
Is there a way to test to see if someone is trying to connect so that
accept doesn't hang me up?
Also, is there a crypt type function I can get??
oops. forgot, thisis Xenix 386 I'm running.
