SCO xenix printer problems

I know this question's been asked before, but I never saw an answer.

How do I speed up my parallel printer and get rid of the upside-down
question marks that magically appear on my console while printing?

I'm running SCO-286 2.2.1 on a Compuadd clone.  Any help greatly
appreciated.
