Tape drive device-driver

It is quite possible that this (or something similar) has been asked before,
but I'll ask anyway.
I have a 60 Mb Sysgen "QIC-File" tape cartridge unit attached to my 80286 box.
Currently I am able to use this with MeSsy-DOS, using Sysgen's "Smart"
utilities. However, I would dearly love to be able to drive it with tar
from Minix.
Does anyone have a device driver for this beast under Minix? Failing that,
could someone please point me in the right direction to get/write one. My major
stumbling block at the moment is my lack of technical information on the
workings of the controller and drive.
I'm cross-posting this to comp.unix.xenix in the hope that someone there may
have some relevant experience that might help.
Drivers for similar units might be helpful in giving me a starting point to
work from.
As usual in these situations, please reply by email, and I'll summarise any
responses to the net.
Thanks in advance,
