There are a bunch of defines (M_XENIX, M_I286, etc) 
being generated by cc itself.  Try
-d to the cc command and you'll see what's really going on.
You can remove the compiler generated defines enmasse or individually
by using the -u and/or -U switches, thus leaving room for your own
defines.
