modem under Unix

I am relatively new to Unix and would appreciate help with the following
problem(s).
 
I am running ISC 386ix.  I am trying to install a 2400 baud Hayes
compatible modem.
 
 
1. When using ttymgmt, and installing the modem on tty00 the lights
   flash and I eventually get a 'init: getty respawning two rapidly'
   error.

2. I uninstalled the modem, and now Vpix gives an 'Error
   opening Serial Device' (the modem worked fine under Vpix before
   using ttymgmt).  I made sure that inittab has been unchanged.
   What does ttymgmt change other then inittab?

3. Must I have a getty process associated with the modem (to use
   'cu', for example)?  Can I use cu to access local DOS BBS's?

4.  I also have a standard IBM Computer Printer.  Whenever I turn
    the printer on, or boot Unix with the printer on, Unix reboots
    itself.
