mouse and VP/ix

I am using SCO VP/ix release 1.1 and a brand new Microsoft bus mouse.
When I start VP/ix explicitly, the mouse works pretty much just
fine in the applications I am running.

However, I have written .bat files for some applications under VP/ix
that reside in the Xenix file system, so that I can run these
applications without explicitly starting VP/ix. In these .bat files,
I start the mouse.com driver before I run the application. The mouse.com
program indicates that it is being installed. When
the application comes up, the mouse doesn't work at all. 
This is true for all applications I have tried this on.

What is going on here? SCO?
