3.5" 1.44mb drives under SCO 2.2.1

Pardon me if I am rehashing old news, but I never have
gotten a straight answer to the question of 3.5" 1.44
drives under SCO 2.2.1.
Are special drivers required, or can you simply use
mknod (C) to make the nodes and be in business?
Also, I know for a fact that you can reference the
file /dev/fd048ds9 using cpio and a 720k 3.5" drive
and IT WORKS!
Would someone be kind enough to explain this, if there
is sufficient response, I will summarize. Thanks in
advance.
