rn "save" problems

We are utilizing "rn" as supplied via SCO distribution of uunet software,  
running xenix 2.3.1 on a compac 386.  It is a common occurance that, 
when running "rn" and attempting to "save" an article, the error message

		% interp buffer overflow!
		caught an internal error -- .newsrc restored 

appears, followed by "rn" terminating.  The article is lost to the user.
There appears to be no consistant situation present on the system that aids
or prevents this situation from occuring.  Any thoughts as to cause/cure ?
