Garbage on line port shut down

I'm trying to figure out what this message *really* tells me. Xenix
reports something like:
Loose cable or garbage on line, port shut down, dev 8.
Now thinking I knew something I went looking for an unterminated serial
line or a login line that had been shutdown or something along those lines.
No luck. The two terminals and a modem that had logins enabled still did
(and if fact had users on them) and there were no "extra" lines in the
output of who -a.
So I thought "dev 8" must be clue of some sort but alas not that I could
figure. On a system with a four port Computone board, COM1 and COM2 you
don't get a minor number of 8 and major 8 is not a serial device.
Any ideas?
For the record the hardware is an ITT 10MHz '286 with the above mentioned
Computone and two generic COM ports, one masquerading as a 2400 baud
internal modem. I don't recall the version of Xenix but it is less than
a year old.
Thanks in advance, Doug
