do I need TCP-IP ?

Very soon now I will begin work on a large project which will involve 20
or so MSDOS front ends talking through modems and direct serial links
to a 386 Xenix system running some sort of data server. All interaction with
the users of this system will be handled by the MSDOS software which will then
send requests to and wait for answers from multiple server processes running
under Xenix.

Our original plan was to develop a custom (relatively simple) protocol to
take care of packetizing, error correction, and perhaps even compression of
information flowing in both directions but now I am wondering if SCO's tcp-ip
might have much of what we need already.

Is this product appropriate for an application like this? Why or why not?
Any alternate suggestions?
