So run packdisk. It's been posted to the net a number of times. Like
any disk diddler, if the system breaks while you do it, you are in a
(potential) world of trouble.
I have backed up and packed my news partition from time to time, but
you can get a big improvement by unmounting the filesystem and running
fsck with the -s option. That orders the freelist. Not as good as a
repack, but a lot better than nothing.
