Help needed on Tandon computer

    I have a 286 based Tandon computer which I need to expand to include
an additional port.  I currently have 2 serial connections to the system,
so there are 3 workstations.  The system is running SCO Xenix and has our
database on it in Informix SQL.  

    Can I add a garden variety serial card, config it to COM3, and expect
it to work?

    Another problem we have been noticing is that the system occasionally
takes a long time to complete a command.  A friend of mine suggests that 
this may be the result of disk fragmentation.  

    Is there any S/W I can get that will alleviate the fragmentation problem?
