Help needed adding com3: and com4: under Xenix

Recently I asked the net for the instructions on adding extra ports
to a xenix system. I have used the instructions produced by
Coert Vonk and I am still having difficulties.
The new com3: port works fine but I have lost com2:
The hwconfig utility shows:
name=serial base=0x3F8 offset=0x7 vec=04 dma=- unit=0 type=Standard nports=1
name=serial base=0x3E8 offset=0x7 vec=05 dma=- unit=2 type=Standard nports=1
My master and sioconf.c files are exactly as per the instructions.
The hardware is a Unisys PW2 800/25 with two built-in serial ports
and an additional ventel internal modem. It is the second buil-in
port which is not now working.
How does the unit number work into all this?
Is there something else I need to do?
BTW Coert's instructions are missing one piece of information: how to
create the nodes and what minor numbers they should be given.
There is one way in which the modem is not working entirely satifactorily:
it will not answer at 2400 baud I alsways get connect 1200 at the other end
This is probably insanity on my part (!) Any ideas?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist me with this.
