I am seeking information about word-processing packages, suitable for standard
secretarial use, which are available for (preferably various versions of) UNIX,
*and* PCDOS *and* MSDOS. (This information is for the committee that this
university has recently set up to reconsider the current guidelines for the
purchase of word-processing systems.) Availability on at least the three
systems named above is regarded as highly desirable in view of existing and
planned purchases of equipment.
The sort of information that would be useful includes:
Name of System, and Name, Address, etc., of its Vendor(s)
Hardware and Operating Systems for which it is available
Availability of conversion aids to/from its method of storing re-formattable
text to those used by other word-processing systems
User experience with the system, its installation, and any support,
documentation, and training aids that are available
Suitability for more sophisticated tasks, e.g. documents including
mathematical formulae.
Pointers to recent published critical reviews of relevant word-processing
systems word also be welcome.
>From an earlier rather poorly formulated enquiry to the net I learnt of
one system which fits our criteria, namely LEX, (which we now have full details
of), but I am sure there must be others. (Wordmarc is one that is also
I believe relevant, but I have little information on it.)
I will summarize responses to the net.
