We (SCI Systems) have recently finished implementing and beta-testing a un*x
shell that is essentially a visual extension of the Bourne shell with an
integrated menu system.  It does not require bit-mapped displays but does use
termcap.  Some notable features...
upward compatibility with Bourne shell
command history and editing
macros (essentially System V shell functions)
background job support
user-definable menus (function key oriented) and command sequences
file and directory browser
fast(er) built-ins for mv, cp, rm, ls -lis, and others
