NEED HELP on UNIX kernel data space allocation

While I was developing a driver in the UNIX kernel (5.0) recently, I
found that when I allocate too much space for, say, a character array in
the kernel, the system will be hung in an unknown state when I used
emacs or vi and tried to exit from it.

I would assume that somewhere there is a system parameter which I can
tune to solve this problem (or any other way). Could any one help ?
