MAC interface to nroff/troff

I am soon going to choose how to write my dissertation and
am debating whether to use nroff/troff (advantage = laser printing
is free where I work) or a MAC word processor such as MS WORD
(advantage = easy, attractive to use).
MY QUESTION: are there any available word processing packages
for a microcomputer (preferably a MAC, but maybe an IBM PC) which
let you write in an easy-to-use environment like MS WORD or Word
Perfect but will also generate (or let you convert to) NROFF code
that produces the same visual results?
An example (in case I'm unclear): I write a document in
MS WORD that has various type sizes, boldface, underscores, etc.
If I want, I can print it out. In addition, the program will
generate an ascii file of NROFF code which produces analogous
results. This file can be ported over to the mainframe that
runs nroff, and I can get it printed out there, too.
Thanks in advance for any help. I am not a frequent reader
of comp.sys.mac or comp.unix, so replies made directly to me
would be very helpful.
