serial port wiring for unix-pc

Some questions...What is the other DTE?  Does it have but 4 wires?  What
is the "extra" one?

The UNIX PC crosses 2 and 3, and connects 7 straight through as you have
said.  It expects 4 and 5 shorted, and 6, 8, and 20 shorted.  Note that
no control is passed across the interface with this connection.
