(Long) Why can't I get PCOMM to work with my Trailblazer?

Is there anyone listening who knows how to use PCOMM in this
configuration? Emmet, I know you're out there somewhere!!

I have a 'blazer that is normally locked at 9600 baud on my
system. I tried to make sense out of the stuff in Appendix
C to version 1.1, but there were no fully worked-out examples.

What happens now is that the 'blazer never shows DTR, and the
call times out. That's using dialer entry 2. When I use entry 4
to access the 'blazer directly, it acts very strange, in ways
I can't quite describe, but not all characters echo, I cannot
receive an ascii file longer than 1(!) byte, the modem starts
dialing at unexpected times, and so on.

The modem works fine with ATE, which is how I had to get the
following stuff. I compiled PCOMM without editing anything, just
getting the 7300 shar to unshar (by renaming the non-7300 files).
I avoid the OBM by not having it as one of the modems defined
(it isn't connected to a phone line anyway).

What follows (after the signature) is intended to give you something
concrete to think about:
