Well, it's now a week after installing the Atasi 3085 I got from Main Source
Electronics and everything is going just fine. There were 2 very minor
difficulties in the upgrade:
1) I needed to leave the piece of cardboard from my old drive underneath the
new drive. At one point, something must have caused a temporary (but
non-damaging) short. During this time, computer would do nothing at all.
2) This drive has what seems to be a decent shock mounting. There are posts
going up from each corner which are attached to the drive itself by screws
with big rubber washers (for padding I suppose). It went O.K., but these
posts made it a very snug fit getting the 3B1 case over top of the drive.
Closing that point, The drive seems to be good and works just fine with a
Unix-PC and for $425 it was a heck of a deal.
(Standard disclaimer: I have no connection with Main Source other than as a
satisfied customer)
Also just finished mangling... I mean modifying my 512K RAM card as per the
instructions for John Milton in HwNote06 (Thanx John!!). That was also
fairly uneventful. Still a bit of a novice with an iron (soldering), I
didn't hit me immediately that the solder needed to be removed on the bottom
of the board. Once my brain returned to earth, everything else went fine.
Those pins are a real bear to get out of those sockets!!!
I hope my experiences will help someone else avoid some difficulty down the
road somewhere...
