Broken ph

Help, My phone manager doen't seem to want to work any more.

The phone status line goes blank when ph is executed. It behaves 
like phclr but isn't(pnclr). I'v tried reloading the software both by hand
ande automatically. Now I'v also tried both versions of ph that I have.
One is a "fixed" phone manager that AT&T sent with the updated(3.5) kernel.

I don't know how else to check the hardware except via diagnostic boot up.
This checks out OK.
I can open the line do an iocntl(..PIOCSET..) to get touch tone dialing 
for mail and close it without any problems. 

Any suggetions? Thanks in advance.
