A number of people have written me expressing interest in TeX binaries
for the 3b1, and I have been available to make them available via
anonymous ftp from host agnes.acc.stolaf.edu (130.71.128.2). Enclosed
is a copy of the README:

  -r--r--r-- 1 mike 716265 Feb 27 11:28 texlib.tar.Z

binaries.tar.Z contains the binaries for TeX, Metafont, some associated
TeXware, and the dvieps driver. All were compiled with gcc 1.31 and
loaded with the 3.51 shared libraries. These binaries may be installed
in any directory of your choice. A few of the "binaries" are actually
shell scripts.

cmfonts.tar.Z contains the Metafont source for the Computer Modern fonts,
together with a few Makefiles. It took my 3b1 four *days*, running night
and day, to produce a complete set of fonts for my epson printer (every
font at design size, plus magsteps half, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.)

dvi.tar.Z contains source code for dvi drivers for a huge variety of
devices (the Beebe drivers from cs.utah.edu).

epsonfonts.tar contains PK format fonts for a 240x216 epson printer.
The dvieps binary (in binaries.tar.Z) wants these to live in
/usr/lib/tex/fonts.

man.tar.Z contains a few manual pages.

mflib.tar.Z contains the Metafont support files. The binaries want these
live in /usr/lib/mf, so the tar file should be extracted in /usr/lib.
Of particular interest is the file mf/inputs/epson.mf, which
is a sample device configuration file. Note that it sets "localfont"
to epson (localfont is the default mode that Metafont will run in).
The INIMF command line that produced plain.base looked like:
	$ inimf
This is Metafont, C Version 1.5 (INIMF)
	** plain input epson dump
	...
	$
(A base file is a preloaded macro package that can be quickly slurped
by Metafont. Look at the executable shell script mf (from binaries.tar.Z)
to see how it is used.)

texlib.tar.Z contains TeX macro packages, predumped formats, and the
(device independent) font metric files. This tar file should be
extracted in /usr/lib.

I can be reached via email as mike at stolaf.edu or mike at wheaties.ai.mit.edu
if you have any questions. Good luck.
