I would like to thank Peter Fales (att!ttrde!pfales) and Andrew Hay
(att!mvuxq!adh) for posting what they did to
upgrade their 1-Meg. UNIX-PCs to 2-Meg of memory
<810 at ttrde.UUCP> and <2981 at cbnews.ATT.COM>.
My machine has the same type motherboard as Andrew's and sat with the
2nd Meg installed but not doing any good for about 7 months.
Just for anyone who is interested, I timed a few commands before and
after getting my upgrade working.
Besides the improvements listed below,
things do seem to zip along a little better, especially 'ua'.
Below are three commands that I timed using the 'time' command.
# First I ran compress on a text file with 89776 characters:
BEFORE AFTER
real 1m29.33s 0m10.81s
user 0m8.28s 0m7.71s
sys 0m1.50s 0m1.16s
(This improvement seems a bit extreme compared to one below. I did a
compress -d filename before timing the compress command after the upgrade
which may have sped things up a bit???)
# Next I compiled a small c-program (7672 chars):
BEFORE AFTER
real 0m37.95s 0m32.83s
user 0m17.91s 0m18.00s
sys 0m3.55s 0m3.40s
# Finally in my home directory I did a /bin/ls:
BEFORE AFTER
real 0m0.68s 0m0.66s
user 0m0.05s 0m0.06s
sys 0m0.20s 0m0.13s
Both times I timed these commands no uucp or daemon activity was going on
(I think) so they should be approximate estimations of the improvement
due to the memory upgrade.
