Anyone have experience with "dialback"?

Does anyone out there use their Un*x PC to dial in to a machine that dials
them back?  If you do, what do you do on your end, other than put the
modem in answer-mode?  My modem answers, but I never get anything from
the other machine.  Will I need to be running some kind of terminal emulator?
(Say no, please, since I don't have anything other than 'cu'.)

Any information cheerfully accepted.
