parallel port

Does anyone know whether it is possible (s it is on some other machines)
to read from, as well as write to, the data lines of the parallel port
in the 3B1?

I'd like to try using this to talk at high speed to another machine, and
the parallel port is free (no printer) while the (slower) serial port is
tied to the modem (eventually bringing you all this query...).

Assuming it is possible, how might I seek out documentation of control
register values, timings, & other arcane matters of this ilk? Or even
loadable driver source, the grail itself?
