UUCP troubles

I've a 7300 at home running 3.51 and a bevy of Suns at work running
SunOS 4.0.3 (old style uucp) using the internal 1200 bps modem on the
7300 and a choice of a USR 2400 or Telebit on the work machines.
When initially configured, uucp seemed to be fairly reliable, but now
days seem to go by with the errors (attached at the end of this note)
before a poll seems to hit 'just right' and the traffic flows.
I can cu/tip from the Sun->7300 with no difficulty.
I can cu from the 7300->Sun with no difficulty but it hangs immediately
upon login (after I select the terminal type). Some of the login
message gets printed to the screen as if they are control characters.
>From the 7300, I've tried cu -o and cu -e but it has no affect.
It seems to me that some serial line paramter that I've got set up on the
sun box has to be the culprit, but what? UUCP with my internet MX host
and other UUCP sites works just fine.
Is it the internal modem on the 7300? Is it 'known' to be flaky?
Errors follow. Any suggestions appreciated.
