Perl and shared libraries

How do you compile perl to use the shared libraries? When I tried,
I got "Undefined: vsprintf". When I added "-lc" to the end, expecting
to pick up the one routine, I got almost the entire libc library as well
as the shared library.

Whats the proper way?
