Thanks to all who sent me mail regarding my problems trying to get a hayes
comp. modem to work bidirectionally on my 3B1. As it turns out, I got the
last piece of information shortly after I posted the help request.

The modem in question is a SmartOne 2400X. It uses NVRAM settings, not dip
switches for the settings. the configure it initially, I used:
AT&C1 (CD indicates carrier) &D2 (hang up when DTR drops) Q1 (quit mode)
E0 (no command echo) S0=1 (answer on first ring) &W (save settings)

The Devices entry loooks like this:
ACU tty002,M - Any smartone *70,\D

and the Dialers entry like this:
smartone	=W	"" \M "" AT&C1E0Q0X4V1M0&D3 OK  ATDT\T CONNECT \m\c

what this does is the &D3 tells the modem to reset itself (just like ATZ)
when DTR drops. This way no results codes are sent to uugetty when an
incoming call connects and you avoid the uugetty vs. modem cage match
problem. :-) so far this is working great... Thanks again!!

As a last note, if you are using the modem as call out only, You may wish to
leave CD high and shut it off in the Dialers file after the \M. The only
disadvantage with the ,M Devices subfield is that it will now always think
that the Devices is there...
