problem with using phone connected to 7300

I have a phone connected to line 1, which is voice by default but is sometimes
used for outgoing data connections. Seemingly randomly, when I pick up the
phone itself to make an outgoing call, the line clicks between idle and active,
thus preventing an outgoing call. At other times, when I pick up the phone the
line stays idle and I can call out just fine. I thought I had the problem
resolved by changing some of the telephone hardware setup settings, but it
came back. Has anyone seen this, and/or have any ideas on what's going on
here? Thanks in advance.

On a separate note, someone a while back noticed their time display on the
top line disappearing. I had a similar problem, and found that 'smgr' was
dying (not cron). At any rate, I recently installed 3.51 (thanks again,
Lenny!), and have not lost the time display since...
