Unix COMPRESS.C on VAX/VMS - help!

Help !

I need a compression program that works on VAX/VMS.  
I have the C source code for the UNIX version of compress.
It compiles and links but crashes on execution.
I know nothing about C.
Can anyone lend me a little assistance?
Someone must have done all this before.
