I echo Larry Campbell's statement about the need for end-to-end error checking,
and recommend the article "End-to-End Arguments in System Design" by
J.H. Saltzer, D.P.Reed, and D.D.Clark in the Nov 1984 ACM Trans on Computer
Systems to anyone working with protocols.  (The names should be recognizable
to anyone familiar with Multics or Arpanet development.)  -- Dave
