problems with getlogin() ?

  (My apologies if this has been discussed before)

  My build of Berkeley 5.61 sendmail started core dumping for no apparent 
  reason - it had been running for a month or so with no problem. 
  Upon investigation, it appears that getlogin() is returning "telnet" 
  instead of the real user login name.    I've seen this kind of behavior
  in the past with ftp and su.  Is this a known problem?   It seems to be
  intermittent, as it will return different results between login sessions.

  IRIX 3.2.1 on Iris 4D
