remote backups

My 4D-25TG is networked (with NFS) into a mostly Sun-based group
of machines. Hanging off of the Sun 3/280 file server is an
Artecon 8mm tape drive. Naturally, I would like to use this for
my backups instead of the cartridge drive so that I can do the
backups unattended. Yet when I try to set this up using the
remote backup feature in the system manager tool, I get the
following message:
The system is unable to open the remote tape device.
on a stickup menu. We have created a /dev/tape link on the
Sun machine to which the 8mm drive is connected, figuring
that would be the device that the backup program would look
for, but we get the same problem.
Has anybody figured out how to do this, either with the
window-based program manager, or some other way?
Thanks,
