2D Graphics Package?

My name is Lisa LaGrand, and I work for the Naval Research Laboratory's 
Scientific Visualization Laboratory.  We are currently looking for a
user-friendly graphics package that produces scatter, line, bar and contour
plots in 2D.  The package's user interface should be very straightforward,
so that a new user will be able to sit down in front of the console and 
produce plots.  This package would be running on a Silicon Graphics IRIS
4D/70GT.
