noport/winopen for qreads required ?

Can I get to read the input queue for stuff from the d/b box, spaceball, dig
pad without opening a window ?

I am currently using noport windows, but it seems that that should
not be required for non graphics devices. A main in another thread
actually does graphics, but this main just deals with peripherals.

Just an idea. I would like to not use the noport hack unless it is absolutely
required.
