Ethernet Communications

Greetings,
I will be porting over some Ethernet code from a Sun 3 to a SGI 4D. I have 
the code, the SGI Network Communications Guide version 1.0, and some network 
documentation for the Suns. What I need is a good overview of Unix communications
and Ethernet, my knowledge base of both is very shaky. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

P.S. If you have ported DARPA's DIS protocols over to the SGI, please let me know.
