Bug in 3.5 grep

A file contains the following line:

Subject: Re: Icarus factor...

Attempt is made to retrieve it with the following command:

grep -i '^subject:.*re' 24289

This does not work with 3.5 grep.  It does work with 4.0 grep & 3.5
egrep.

Note that the following 2 variations do work:

grep -i '^subject:.*Re' 24289
grep 'Subject:.*Re' 24289
